Insta Story for 24 Hour Skypeathon 2019 #lmsworldwide

Final Post for 2019 Skypeathon

We did it!!!! Awesome experience, great times, new friends, a ton of knowledge and a lifetime of memories! Thanks Lewisville ISD for allowing us to have this time!!!

Libya Mystery skype#25

Our 25th and second to last Mystery Skype is under way. It didn't take long before our interviewers figured out where he was. We just found out he was in Misrata,Libya!!!(that was easy) After we found his location,we began to exchange culturally. Our interviewers found out that Libya's main language is Arabic and that most of their meals consist of rice.We also got to share some of the native foods from Texas. Also he got to talk to one of the girls in skypeathon, Halaa ,who speaks fluent Arabic. They were talking back and forth in Arabic!!!! He is also a English teacher at a school in Libya. Finally our drum line played for a grand finale to seal the deal on our second to last Mystery Skype.

Austin Mystery Skype #26

This is Skype #26 and this is a mystery Skype!!!   The Mystery Skype we're doing is not from the southern hemisphere, they're in the U.S!  They're in Texas, but they're not north of Dallas or in a major city. We just accomplished that they're in a suburb of Austin while they continue to guess where we are. As they get closer, their reactions get even funnier. Once again, the other school found out that we are in Flower Mound before we could find out where they are.  They were in a little town called West Lake. This was a fourth grade class that did an amazing job of figuring out where we were!

One Skype to Go and our 2019 Skypeathon will end...

Brazil Mystery Skype #24

This was yet another Mystery Skype! Samantha gave us these clues:
She's in the western hemisphere. Her country's big. English is not her first language. It's VERY hot there. She does not speak Spanish. Her country has a coastline on the Atlantic Ocean. She is East of Chile. She borders Uruguay. We guessed that she is in Brazil... and we guessed RIGHT. Fun fact, they don't celebrate Thanksgiving there! She began explaining holidays like Carnival.  Carnival has several games, fun clothing, great food and even a parade! She teaches preschool and has a little boy of her own. Some modes of transportation they use are cars, buses and taxis. She likes watching soccer and volleyball. There are 5 different regions, and they all have different cultures. Samantha was mesmerized when we told her we had Skyped 20 countries.  Lamar's drum line performed for Samantha and she told us it sounded like the music in Carnival.

Elephant Sanctuary Skype#23

Skype#23 is a different type of Skype. We went on a tour to The Elephant Sanctuary in Hohenwald, Tennessee. This Elephant Sanctuary is a very important habitat for endangered elephants, especially the African and Asian elephants. Elephants have a lot of interesting facts about them. Their molars weight about 10lbs, and their widely cracked skin absorbs mud and water to cool the elephants down. Asian elephants eat 200-300lbs of food each day that is primarily full of nutrient pellets that keep them healthy and can help them live up to 70 years old.

They pick up the elephants on trucks from different places.  It's a very hard process to get the elephants to stand up after they had sat down. You can watch a live view from the sanctuary about the elephants. It is hard to recover from floods and natural disasters because elephants are big animals. When it's raining the elephants don't mind being in the rain if it is warm. They have a barn for the elephants. Elephants can come and go from the barn whenever they want. Each elephant takes a different time to adapt to the sanctuary. Some elephants get nervous and anxious. That is the end of our wonderful presentation about The Elephant Sanctuary.

Kenya Skype #22

We are about to talk to a guy from Kenya who is  a missionary! They train faculty, they help people though pastors and churches! To reach people in churches to help them in need they even provide Bibles. There are 72,000 churches in Kenya! Pastors earn 10 to 15 dollars a month.  Kenya has a variety of different cultures. weddings in Kenya are very extravagant beautiful and last all day. Kenya's weather never changes and is always the perfect temperature. They brought in giraffe and would keep them! You can put food on your hand and they will eat it from your hand!
There is a strong family atmosphere and feel between all churches and music is a strong denominator.

Venezuela Skype #21

This is Skype #21 We're skyping with VENEZUELA!! We Skyped a family. They're having problems with the government, especially their leader, a dictator. They're out of school today for a holiday where they celebrate at a Carnival. The Carnival is 2 days long! They were talking about ice cream and he brought up that back then, ice cream was cheap and very popular and now ice cream is more expensive. They celebrate Thanksgiving, a lot of Catholic holidays, Christmas and lots more. They're about to celebrate Carnival which is a holiday celebrated before the beginning of Lent.  What they do for fun is play music and sing as a family!!
Senora Drackett came in and talked to them and they got so excited so they sang us another song and it was amazing!!!

India Skype #20

Our 20th skype is India! This is Saanvi's cousin in India. We started off with our cheerleaders showing him a cheer. Apparently Indian food will make you hungry at night because of the spice. 98% of spice in the world comes from India. Hindu and Telugu are the most common languages. People go to temples to worship their gods daily. Fun fact, his favorite ice cream is vanilla! Diwali is a major celebration. In India, there are lots of trees. His favorite word is "obviously". Their seasons are a bit twisted. They use coca-cola to kill bugs. The national animal of India is a tiger. When he grows up, he wants to be the CEO of Google! We really enjoyed this skype because he was really funny!

Chattanooga, TN Skype #18

This was a surprise! We actually had a Skype call that could not make it and this teacher asked if we could Skype because she saw that we had it open! So, we mystery skyped with them to figure out where they were and they figured out where we were! We are definitely getting better with this!!!

Vietnam Mystery Skype Skype #19

Right now we have a mystery skype.  It's Skype #19!!! We are talking to a nice lady but we don't know where she is!!! We know she is in the southern and eastern hemisphere.

SHE'S IN VIETNAM!!!!!!
Right now we are trying to found out what city! She's actually in a Province which is smaller than a city and more rural.  We figured out she is Hung Yen!!!

Our cheerleaders performed for her along with our mascot! She didn't know what a Longhorn was but once we explained that it was a certain type of cow she totally understood!  She also asked about what subjects we covered in school.  She was very enjoyable to chat with!

Georgia Skype #17 (cultural exchange)

This Skype was one like no other. We had a cultural exchange with Georgia, and shared traditional foods of our country. First Georgia presented Khachpuri,Mtsvadi, and Gozinaki. These are all traditional dishes that they eat in Georgia. The Georgian students even showed us how to properly cook and prepare these meals. The most famous dish from Georgia is Khinkali,a meat dumpling dish. The students from Georgia believe that "If we have our own dishes, it makes us unique from the world."Next we shared our food video of great Tex-Mex,steak,and barbecue cuisine.

Yaroslavl,Russia Culture Swap! Skype #16

We are now skyping our friends from Russia!!! They are located in Yaroslavl. Yaroslavl is much older than other major cities, though it's not that large. It has beautiful scenery and is one of the oldest cities in Russia. For a few months, Yaroslavl was the capital of Russia, but not anymore! Yaroslavl is called the "capital" of Russian cities (how ironic) of the the "Golden Ring". The people of Yaroslavl also celebrate the ancient Slavic holiday, Maslenitsa. Yaroslavl has a different money currency that we do. They are on a banknote with a nominal value of 1,000 rubles. Yaroslavl also became the first Russian cities where the tram line was laid in 1900. The first diesel engine, a trolleybus and a truck where the first in Russia to be produced. There is a historical center in Yaroslavl that has 140 architectural monuments, and it is a UNESCO world heritage site. In 2003, Yaroslavl was awarded the European Union flag for the city's contribution to the development of foreign policy relations, and the Global Policy Forum was in Yaroslavl in 2011. The first woman cosmonaut, Valentina Tereshkova traveled to space in 1963, and lived in Yaroslavl. We are very lucky to have our friends skype to us!!! Thank you for letting us skype with you! :D

Hungary Mystery Skype #15

Another mystery skype! This class looks about our age but they are just learning English.  The teacher is translating as they go and helping them to understand English.  They figured out that we were in America after the third question and the same boy who figured out America also figured out that we were in Texas. When it was our turn, we figured out that they were in Europe very quickly but it took a while for us to get to their final country.  It was Hungary!!!! One neat thing we noticed was that one of the boys was wearing a shirt with English writing on it and they were just learning our language! Another fun skype for our morning! We're starting to wrap up in blankets and get a little tired, but we're trying to stay awake!

Cannes, France Mystery Skype #14

Our fourteenth Skype of the day is another mystery Skype. They asked us if we lived in the southern hemisphere, and when we responded with the same question, both of our answers were no. Almost immediately, we guessed that they lived in France, both from their accents and clues.  They asked us next if we were bordered by the USA which although we tried not to smile, eventually gave us away as their next question was if we lived in the US. They revealed they were in Southern France and we told them where we lived was bordered by ocean. After more clues, we had narrowed it down to some cities in South Eastern France, that bordered the sea, and were more than 50 km from Lyon ( a large city in France ). We finally figured out that their closest city was Cannes, France. It's safe to say this skype was a success as we were able to have fun finding where they were, and give them clues about our location, as well as do a short conversation, asking some questions about their daily life and answering questions about our Skypathon. Needless to say this skype was lots of fun!

Uganda! Skype #13

Our thirteenth Skype begins with meeting Raymond Kaija, a pastor from Uganda! Each and every student has a very unique name. For fun, they love to play soccer, which they call "netball". They also enjoy playing basketball, football, and more. In Uganda, they like to eat rice, meat, sweet potatoes, and bananas. They speak 7 languages, such as English, Swahili, French, and more. Animals you can find in Uganda are pigs, dogs, cats, donkeys, and more.
They celebrate birthdays in Uganda the same as we do in the USA. They eat cake, sing songs, and decorate with colorful decorations! The students we skyped go to a christian school, so they also celebrate Easter, and Good Friday, just like some of us.

Morocco Mystery Skype #12

Mystery Skype number 12 is off to a great start. Everyone is wide awake, and asking many questions. It's about 4:00 am, and we have gotten a call. Our interviewers have received word that they are in Africa, have a coastline, and were once owned by the Portuguese. It took quite a bit of questioning.  I think the language barrier made it a little harder because some of their answers didn't fit the country in the end, but we finally got there!  The interviewers narrowed it down to Angola or Morocco. It was Morocco!!!

Croatia Mystery Skype #11

We are ready to start our Mystery Skype, bright-eyed, and full of energy.
They are in the Northern Hemisphere and they are a class of kids about our age. Their classroom looks very colorful and beautiful. It seems like a public school. We just found out that they don't touch the Mediterranean Sea. They just guessed that we are in the USA. They are off to a good start and we need to find out more about them. They asked if we were in New York, so they are a little far away but the are getting closer. We just found out that they don't touch the Red Sea. They don't live in Ireland. They do not speak Portuguese. They guessed that we are in Texas!! They are very intelligent kids, and now they are trying to dig deeper and find the city. YAY!! We guessed that they are in Croatia.

Now they are guessing the city.. They guessed Houston, and they are not that close. We are trying hard to guess their city. Our cartographers are hard at work and coming up with interesting questions. They guessed Dallas, so they are VERY VERY VERY close!! They will definitely get it soon. We are going back and forth on guessing the city. We sadly ran out of time, so their city is Pisarovina. That was our mystery skype with Croatia.

Denmark Mystery Skype #10

We have begun skype number 10; a mystery skype. So far they have found out that we are from the USA and they are not land locked. They are also not an island. As we continue to guess, we get closer and closer to finding out where they are. The classroom of children have a slight accent that will give us hints. It is also day time, so we know that they are somewhere pretty far from us. Ryan has guessed that they are from Denmark, and they have guessed that we are from Texas; now we're moving on to cities. I noticed that some of the clothing that they are wearing are very popular here in the US. After many tries, they have figured out that we live in Flower Mound. We are continuing to ask more questions and find where they are. As a team we came to the conclusion that they live in Hojby, Denmark, and we were right!

East Timor Skype #9

The person who we are skyping is one of our Skypers' sister. They celebrate birthdays by throwing parties, and some get presents, but many just get hugs and kisses. Some popular holidays are All Saints Day, and a ton more. They eat a ton of rice since they live in Asia. Some restaurants serve rice because they think the customer won't get full without it. She moved to East Timor to join the Peace Corps. Now she teaches scuba diving and she guides people how to dive. She sometimes takes the customers on trips, and they dive there. Her job is to show the customers all the cool things about what is underwater in East Timor. Get this, she is a former Lamar student!!! East Timor is the size of Connecticut!! East Timor is really hot. When it is a wet reason, it rains A LOT!! People in East Timor some have small phones, but most have old flip-phones. They have a lot of cats that populate the area, and they have a variety of fauna, like jungles and mangroves. They have very small houses, as there is not much space. They have a big water tub in the middle of the diving shop that they use to clean. A normal diving tank weighs 17 kg (37.5 lbs)! She can literally walk ACROSS THE STREET to get to the ocean! They grow their own coffee, so they get fresh coffee from the mountains any time of day! It can take up to an hour to get ready! When she was in the Peace Corps, she lived in a small community, with no shopping center, so they had to drive 3 hours to Dili the capital city!

Palestine Mystery Skype #8

So far we have Skyped with 7 different locations. It's about midnight now and we are still full of energy ready to meet our mystery Skypers. This mystery skype was easier to figure out. Mr. Eyad Ahmed was from Palestine. One of our Skypathon members, Halaa, knew Arabic and could easily communicate with him. They had a long conversation about what subjects she takes in school in America. His son, who is a 10-year old, likes to create technology. He created a tech piece called a Micro-Bit. It multiplies for you very easily Type in 2 numbers, shake it, and it will give you the answer. The is so cool!

Thailand Mystery Skype #7

We just began our 3rd mystery skype! They answered the call, and they all are 8th grade students wearing school uniforms. The first question that we asked is if they were in the eastern hemisphere, and they are. The 2nd question was were they in Asia, which they are. The 3rd question was if they were not  east Asia, which they are not. After many questions later, we figured out that they aren't land locked, they aren't on an island, so they must be in Thailand! Once we figured this out, we begin asking questions about their culture, and what it is like living there. The weather their is hot. They like to eat spicy foods. Lastly, their favorite sports are badminton. At the very end of the skype one of the students showed us how to dance in Thailand! We will keep you updated with our other skypes!

DEA Skype #6

We are skyping with a DEA agent working in Mexico. In the 1980s, the United States learned that an abundance of illegal drugs were coming from Mexico, so they created the DEA to combat the drug dealing. Marijuana, methane, cocaine, and more drugs are smuggled across the border. To work in the DEA, you need a bachelors degree. There is a lot of risk with the job. This particular man spent 9 years working for the DEA, and 12 years on border patrol. In his opinion, he thinks the wall is a good idea in heavy trafficking areas. One of his scariest experiences was being shot at, and dealing with people with knives. A lot of the deaths come from drug dealers killing other drug dealers. He stays safe by not going in the bad part of town, and having an armored vehicle. He watches his surroundings, and has had a lot of training on how to stay safe. He has a lot of drug dealers in his home city of Ciudad Juarez, in Chihuahua, Mexico. He works to keep drugs out of schools. He enjoys parts of the border patrol, such as helping many people. His favorite flavor ice cream is Cookies and Cream, from Bluebell. In his free time, he hikes, goes to the gym, and watches movies. A piece of advice from him is to keep good friends and don't fall victim to drugs. Working in the DEA gives him different perspectives, and he sees people in all walks of life. He has eaten at the Cattleman Steakhouse. He has also eaten Rattlesnake, and they are "full of bones and taste like chicken". He says drugs are never any good, and they always cause problems.

Australia Mystery Skype #5

Our cartographers and interviewers are ready as we gear up for the second mystery skype, and the fifth overall skype, of the night! After some questions about hemispheres, time of day, etc. we uncovered that they were in Australia! However, Australia is a big continent so we decided to attempt to decipher their city. They discovered our country and state, but it probably didn't help that we had Texas flags in the back! They got it all the way down to us being near Lewisville Lake! We also guessed their city being in Perth, a part of Western Australia. They guessed Downing Middle School, which although was quite offensive to us Longhorns, was scarily close to our actual location! After guessing at a boarding school in Eastern Perth, they were slightly offended which made us laugh, but also told us we were near their location. After some guessing back and forth they figured out that we are Lamar Middle School and that they were a grammar school on the river. This was one of the most anticipation-filled mystery skypes we've done and was lots of fun! Thank you to the teachers we asked a thousand questions to and on to the next skype!

Antarctica Skype #4

We're doing a "surprise" Skype with Antarctica. This Skype was a bit last minute and involved about 2 other groups in the Skype. Briarhill Middle School and Delay Middle School let us join in and learn together. They began by showing us a graph/diagram of something called the "IceCube Lab". They talked about charged particles traveling faster than light in ice! They also said they had just discovered something called "neutrinos". They used a lot of scientific terms which made it a bit confusing. They also said that the sun goes all the way around instead of going up and down! They're not allowed to leave the station for 9 months! Therefore, they have a movie theater, pool table, board games, green screens and musical instruments to keep themselves entertained. This Skype was very educational and entertaining.

Japan #3

This is our third skype. It is in Japan. Guess what? The people we are skyping is a KINDERGARTEN class.  They are very obendient for a bunch of cute, little kindergarteners. In Japan, it is now Friday at 9:00 am.  It is 6:00 pm on Thursday in Flower Mound, TX.  They all were so exited to talk to us. The teacher is a sub in an international school. That is very cool. Some of them speak Japanesse, and they were so excited.

California Gold Rush Museum Virtual Field Trip! Skype #2

The Gold Rush in California
Thousands of miners flooding to the golden state in the hopes of getting rich. Gold fields at the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains busy day and night. Gold was first discovered in 1848, not the times people usually associate with gold panning. That place used to be a quaint little valley, all sunshine, smiley faces, and rainbows. Then the miners came and it was fire, freshly turned soil and dead stuff, like a little sample of Doomsday. Most of those miners traveled on wagons and on foot, trekking for over 6 months across the land. But most of these money-hungry miners would on average find about an ounce of gold per day. That's still more money than they would have found lying around back home, though.
Gold panning went a bit like this. First, you put some dirt in your gold pan. Then you get some water in the aforementioned dirt-filled gold pan and slosh it around. Hopefully, once you've poured out the water, some gold remains. However, lots of miners left California broke, for they could not find much gold. Once, a gigantic fire in 1854 burned the an entire town down. Tough people, they began rebuilding very soon after. However, the very same happened again in 1857, and burned it all down again.
In Columbia, you could only be represented in court if you were white. That very courtroom was the same place people got married. Speaking of multi-purpose buildings, let's talk about the barbers. The Barbershop was the place for haircuts, medicine, and the bathhouse. Disgusting, right? Cleanliness wasn't exactly number one on the priority list.

Mystery Skype Qatar #1 2019!

Our first skype of the 2019 skypeathon was a mystery skype! Oops!!! Sorry we woke him up at 1:00 AM! Our interviewers and cartographers are working very hard to figure out where he lives. Questions keep flowing in but we have figured out that he boarders the Indian Ocean and Iran! We guessed Iraq, Afghanistan, and Kuwait. Finally, we guessed Qatar!!!! We were right!  Mr.Atef Elbatal is a native Egyptian, but lives in Qatar. Mr.Atef loves chicken and rice dishes and really enjoys the worlds most famous sport - football(soccer).

Today is the day!!!

After weeks of preparation, our Skype team is ecstatic about our event!  We're "visiting" 26 countries including East Timor, Uganda, Venezuela & more! We're participating in 16 Mystery Skypes!  We're going on two virtual field trips, meeting with a DEA agent!  It's going to be amazing!  Follow us on our blog here or on Twitter & Instagram @lamar6cw and follow #lmsworldwide!

Practice Mystery Skype!

This morning, our new 2019 Skypeathon members experienced our first skype! However, there is a challenge because their location is a mystery. It's our job to uncover where they are in the world. We began taking turns asking where each other are trying to figure out each others locations. So far, we know that they are in the northwest hemisphere, they're not not on an island, they're by the Pacific Ocean and they're in North America. We believe that they are in Mexico. Turns out we were right! After thirty minutes of hard work our interviewers and cartographers figured out where they were!!
